Centre Spotlight

Intertek

For this Centre Spotlight, we hear from Kevin Saunders, Training and Site Services Manager at Intertek, a global leader in quality and safety with more than 44,000 employees, in 1,000 locations and 100 countries. As an international provider of CompEx certification, Intertek understands CompEx’s impact, as well as the best ways to successfully engage and increase the global spread of learners.

What are your most common types of customer/business?

We have a fantastic mix of oil and gas, chemical, food manufacturing and general electrical engineering companies who come to us to learn the theoretical and practical skills they need for hazardous locations. Within these organisations, we train a huge range of roles, from electricians, electrical and design engineers and mechanical fitters, to site and operation managers, engineering managers and company directors.

Are there any particular challenges in your region?

There are challenges for some regions where there is not a fixed CompEx Centre available for training. To overcome this issue, Intertek was the first CompEx centre to offer the scheme to a global market through our mobile CompEx Assessment Rigs. By utilising our mobile rigs to deliver training in-country around the globe, we help our clients gain the qualifications they need to work in hazardous locations.

Based closely on our principal centres in the UK, our mobile rigs are transported via bespoke flight cases and assembled at a suitable location on or near the client’s site.

What would you like to succeed in doing the next year?

We also have a licensed CompEx Centre in Cairo, Egypt where we offer the Ex 01-04 Gas & Vapours course. In 2020, we will be looking to broaden the scope of courses we deliver in Egypt.

In 2019, we added a new course to our portfolio, 18th Edition Wiring Regulations BS 7671:2018. We also gained City & Guilds accreditation for this course, offering our clients an internationally recognised qualification widely accepted by employers around the world. 2020 will see us develop our training offering further and adding City & Guilds Inspection and Testing 2391 course to our growing portfolio of City & Guilds accredited courses.

What do you think sets CompEx apart from other accreditation bodies?

CompEx offers a globally recognised qualification for hazardous locations, providing an industry benchmark for best practice.
